Feniex W.E.B Mobile Apps
Context
— Feniex released a web portal version of Feniex WEB to help Fleet Managers track, manage, and maintain their fleet vehicles.
After being asked by many Fleet Managers, we want to explore bringing this tool to Mobile Devices.
The Problem
Fleet Managers can’t be next to their laptop all the time, they need a more convenient solution to manage and communicate with their fleets.
The Solution
Design a Mobile app (iOS and Android) that gives Fleet Managers a similar experience as the Web Portal version so that they can manage their fleet vehicles anytime, anywhere.
Design Process
We want to figure out how our Fleet managers are using the Web Portal version, then use that data to design a Mobile App that would solve those problems
1.Empathize
What would help Fleet Managers track and manage their fleets better?
We interviewed 14 Fleet Managers located in 7 different cities in Texas.
11/14 Fleet Managers said that they would love to have the app version since they don’t spend most of their time next to their computers.
13/14 Fleet Managers said they loved the look & feel of the Website Portal.
8 Fleet Managers said they used the Map Tab the most, 6 said they looked at the Vehicle tab more often.
2. Conceptualize
Using the date we collected, we created User Flow and Feature List to get approval from the CEO & VP of Engineering.
User Flow for the App
Feature List stay the same as the Website Portal
Default view is the Map to give Fleet Managers good overview of the Fleet’s whereabouts
3. Design & Test
Design inspiration: Futuristic Video Game
Gives the app a gamification aspect since our users are mostly male from 25 - 55 years old.
We created a Design System for Mobile Apps but were able to re-use some of the components we created for the Website Portal.
We created a Working Prototype to test it with Fleet Managers.

Push Notifications
100% of Fleet managers like the App idea because they can receive timely notification about Crucial Events and take actions quickly!

Usertesting Takeaways:
Before handling off the design to Dev, 2 prototypes were creates and brought to Usertesting.com where we learnt more about how Users interact with the Apps and navigate through all the features.
Usertesting.com Highlights:
85% Users love the Gamification aspect of the Apps, saying that it makes them feel like they are in a Video Games — would enjoy using the app on a daily basis.
9/20 mentioned that Messenger Tool can take less clicks to get to (but also knowing that there is a Notification Center helps with that)
3 Users suggested Mileage services can be up top as it’s a feature that will be used often
Adding the option to quickly Email Invoice under Payment Methods would be very helpful.
Vehicle > Fleet Overall Health List can benefit from having a Filter Feature added on. Fleet Managers can then Filter their Fleet by Type/Health Score/ Status (active/inactive)
5 people said they would love to see more Automation (If Oil level drops under 15%, automatically send a Message to the designated Vehicle Operator to come back for an Oil Change)
The Outcome
The App Prototype was shown to 35 fleet managers and received extreme excitement.
30/35 Fleet Managers said they would pay extra to use the app.
13/14 said they loved the look & feel of the Website Portal.
8 asked for Integrations to help with their workflow.
Despite the hype, Feniex decided to pause this project until a further date.
Final Thoughts
In order for this Project to happen, we have spent countless hours sitting down with the AT&T iOT team to figure out all the Data Points and learn more about how the Backend Service was created.
Using Feniex One Controller and OBD2 Scanner, there are 250+ parameters/data points can be displayed on the Front-end. This is when an UX designer like me is needed.
Having all of those data points in mind, I then use research, survey, reports, interviews and user tests to figure out which data is important to Fleet Managers.
After researching and understanding Users’ needs, we have decided to only actively used around 35 types of data for Feniex WEB. As we gather for insight/feedback from Users in the future, we can adjust our Product Roadmap to have other features that include other types of Data.
